How To Freeze Green Beans

If you are going to begin the process of freezing green beans you are going to want to know how to do it.  You will start by getting everything that is needed to carry out the process together.  You will need to have some fresh green beans, a vacuum sealer of some type with the bags that go along with it, a sharp knife, a pot of boiling water, and a bowl filled with water and ice.

Learning how to freeze green beans is not very difficult at all if you have these things and you follow the next simple instructions.  You will start by cleaning the green beans.  Once you have gotten all of the dirt off of these green beans you are going to want to take your knife and cut the ends off of the green beans.  Then, you will continue by cutting the green beans into smaller pieces.  If you want to cut them into French style you can cut them long ways rather than into pieces.  It really is up to you and what you prefer.

You will then get a large pot of water boiling on the stove.  When you have that placed on the stove you will get another bowl out and fill it with ice and water.  You will place the green beans into the boiling water for a short time so that they can be blanched.  This will kill the enzymes that damage the green beans while they are in the frozen state.  This entire process is only going to take approximately three minutes.  You do not want to leave them in the water much longer than that.  Remember, you are not cooking them you are simply stopping those enzymes from working.  Once the beans are in the water you will want to cover the pot and let them cook for the full three minutes.

You will then take them out of the boiling water and place them into the cold ice water to stop the cooking process. You will complete this step in the same amount of time that it took you to complete the blanching process.  Therefore, if you cooked them for three minutes you will leave them in the ice water for three minutes.  Once this step is finished, you will drain them and place them into bags. 

If you have a vacuum sealer you will then take the air out of the bags.  If you do not have one of these machines do not worry.  You can begin closing your zip lock bag but leave a very small space to place a straw down in the side.  You will then suck the air out of the bag and close it the rest of the way.  This is just as effective so do not think that you have to buy special equipment to enjoy fresh green beans year round.
